The Insulin Story

When we eat carbohydrates in the form of sugar or things that turn into sugar like bread, pasta, potatoes or alcohol, blood sugar spikes. When it does, insulin is released from the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone that enters into the cell wall through receptor sites.  Every hormone, as well as all neurotransmitters, have their own specific receptor sites. Each are shaped differently. A hormone or a neurotransmitter fits into its specific receptor site like a key into a lock.  When the receptor site for insulin is “unlocked”, the cell wall “opens” to receive nourishment in the form of glucose.

When we eat carbs for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as snacks in between, the pancreas is constantly producing insulin. Because the cells become overwhelmed with insulin they become insensitive to it. In addition, the receptor sites for insulin get covered over with grease that comes from toxic waste. When they get covered over with toxic waste the receptor sites change shape, which causes them to become unrecognizable to its hormone. Glucose is then unable to get into the cells.

If blood sugar isn’t normalized within a reasonable amount of time, cells and tissues get damaged.

Eventually, the pancreas gets worn out and stops producing insulin. This is when we get diagnosed with diabetes.

Because glucose isn’t feeding the cells, diabetics think they are hungry all the time, so they eat more. If they eat more carbs, they release more insulin which further depletes the pancreas. Though their cells are starving, diabetics get fat and tired. They also get thirsty and have to pee all the time. That’s because the kidneys are attempting to pee out the sugar.

Too much insulin is inflaming, fattening and acidifying.

When antibiotics disrupt gut ecology, candida and other anaerobic bacteria take over the gut. Because insulin causes us to crave sugar, we are attracted to eating more sweets. This not only feeds the candida it creates more insulin to keep the cycle going. Candida is also one of the causes of toxic waste and cellular grease. Many diabetics have a dirty bowel that is full of candida, for thrush and itchy rashes, which are both indicators of candida, are often seen with both type 1 and 2 diabetes. Anyone who craves sugar should be suspicious of having insulin toxicity and candida.

Before we become insulin resistant, we become insulin toxic, which is a term that Dr. Majid Ali coined to describe the true effect of too much insulin. According to him anyone who is more than 15 pounds overweight is insulin toxic. He says that there are 7 signs of insulin toxicity. They are:

  1. Cellular stress, but there is no outward sign that there is anything wrong.  The earliest visible signs can be seen under a microscope. They are seen as grease build-up on fat cells, fat droplets in the liver, and damaged and sticky blood. At this point insulin is already damaging the endo cells in the cardiovascular tree and the nerves, which, if  left unchecked, will eventually lead to neuropathy, nerve damage, dementia and heart disease.
  2. Weight gain and fatigue, but not because you are eating too much. Rather, it is because you are eating too many carbs and not enough protein and healthy fats.
  3. Neuropathy and numbness in the extremities and additional fatty changes in the liver.
  4. Pre-diabetes has no additional outward symptoms.
  5. Diabetes is characterized by weight gain, feeling fatigued, thirsty, and needing to pee a lot.
  6. Complications of insulin injections which release more insulin into the body further damaging the cell and tissues.
  7. Amputations, kidney failure, dialysis, heart attack, stroke, diabetic retinopathy, Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative disease, etc.

In addition to affecting the body, insulin resistance affects the brains ability to utilize glucose. This starves the brain of energy and promotes brain cell degeneration. For this reason, Alzheimer’s disease has been labeled type 3 diabetes. However, in all cases of neurodegenerative disease, the brain is starved for both nourishment and oxygen, and is in a continuously inflamed state.

Dietary Considerations

Insulin toxicity is the earliest consequence of a carbohydrate-rich diet but it has no outward symptoms until the third stage. By that time a lot of cellular damage has already been done. A carbohydrate-rich diet is a very unnatural diet for human beings to eat. No other animal on the planet gorges themselves on glucose-producing foods like humans do.

There are two ways to feed the cells: glucose and ketones. Glucose is created from carbohydrates. Ketones are created from fats and proteins. A ketogenic diet is a very low-carb diet that is high in healthy animal fats and protein and low in carbohydrates.

It is possible to reverse insulin toxicity by eating a low-carb diet. To reverse diabetes or any other neurodegenerative disease, including epilepsy and brain cancer, you may want to consider eating a ketogenic diet which is simply a more extreme form of a low-carb diet.

How low in carbs depends upon how insulin toxic one has become. To determine this, take a fasting blood glucose test. Your numbers will guide you on the amount of carbs you can safely eat in a day before one exacerbates their insulin problem. In lieu of a glucose test, you can take an educated guess by checking the 7 stages on insulin toxicity to discover where you fall on the continuum. If you have eaten a high carb diet for years, your insulin production may be so deranged that you have to remove all fructose from your diet for a period of time before your body will normalize again. Fructose is in all sugar products including honey, fruit, and sweet vegetables like carrots and beets. You must also remove everything that turns into sugar like bread, pasta, starchy vegetables like potatoes, and alcohol. If you did this you would be eating a ketogenic diet.

Leaky Gut Syndrome

Toxic waste is created in the gut. It is formed from natural cell waste products, the waste products of candida and other anerobic bacteria that take over the gut after our probiotics have been killed by antibiotics, hydrogenated or trans fats that can’t be metabolized because they’ve been made in a chemists lab, food additives like MSG, dyes, and preservatives, which also can’t be metabolized for the same reason, and heavy metals and other industrial chemicals that we ingest with food and water. Because of the trans fats toxic waste is very greasy. This sodden mass of chemicals suffocates the bowel and leads to leaky gut syndrome. Leaky gut syndrome causes your gut to become permeable. When it does toxic waste and undigested food protein breaches the digestive tract and enters into the circulating blood to travel all over the body. Because your body doesn’t recognize this stuff, it creates antibodies to fight it. This is the cause of food sensitivities, which are also inflaming.

In order to fully remove the cause of inflammation, you must not only normalize insulin by going on a low-carb diet, you must also remove all the foods that the body has become sensitive to.  Once your blood sugar normalizes and your leaky gut has been healed your food sensitivities will become a thing of the past.   To that end, there are a couple of ways to go about determining what foods you are sensitive to.

  1. The best way is to do a food sensitivity test. This is the best because there is no guess work. Once you know what foods your body is sensitive to, you simply remove them until the gut is healed.
  2. Because so many people are allergic to wheat and dairy, the second method is to do a 6 week trial of no fructose, gluten and dairy to see if your symptoms improve. If they don’t improve sufficiently, you must then discover what other foods you are sensitive to and remove them as well. Unless you are only allergic to one or two foods, in my experience this is very difficult to figure out for yourself.

Once you have removed all offending foods, you must then rotate foods that you are not sensitive to. That’s because, until the gut is healed you will keep leaking whatever you eat into the bloodstream. In time, you will then become sensitive to the new foods. I have read that it is best to do a 4 day rotation diet to prevent this from happening, as it takes up to 4 days to clear a food from your system. After your leaky gut is healed, this will no longer be necessary. It is very important to pay attention to your symptoms. No allergy test is full proof. When your body reacts to something you’ve eaten, stay away from it for a few days even if it was not on the list of sensitive foods and see how you do the next time.

Once you go on either a low-carb or ketogenic diet, you will not only normalize your blood sugar, you will stop feeding your candida. To kill candida it is important to take a candida killing drug or herbs, which I discuss in my previous post Health Begins In the Bowel. After 6 weeks on the entire candida killing protocol you can begin eating a limited amount of fruit and sweet vegetables again if your body doesn’t react to them.

Since this is a DNA test, all that is required is that you send them a few strands of your hair. For a single intolerance test the price is $85. For $10 more you can also test for  nutritional deficiencies. There is a price break for multiple tests, so if you want to check everyone in your family the test per person goes down considerably. A third test will check for heavy metals in the same hair sample. All three tests cost $210. The three of them together will give you an enormous amount of information that will help you understand the riddle of your disease.

Coconut Oil for Ketones

In addition to removing sugar and foods your body is sensitive to, you may also want to add coconut oil to your diet if you are not allergic to it. Coconut oil is a brain food that produces medium chain fatty acids and a lot of ketones. Insulin is not necessary to nourish the cells with ketones. When one eats a ketogenic diet they rest their pancreas, which gives it time to heal and regenerate. It also give their cells time to heal and become sensitive to insulin again. This is why a ketogenic diet can reverse type 2 diabetes if you stick to it long enough. Dr. Ali says that he has even seen it reverse a case of type 1 diabetes in a young child.

Coconut oil can help reverse brain insulin resistance and improve cognitive function. It also improves insulin secretion in the pancreas and insulin sensitivity in the cells. When added to foods, coconut oil slows down the digestion of carbohydrates, allowing glucose to be released into the bloodstream at a steady, even pace which moderates blood sugar levels.

The book The Coconut Miracle by Bruce Fife, says that coconut oil is antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial. It kills many infections of the brain and body including ulcers, sinus infections, bladder infections, gum disease and cavities, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and many other illnesses. It also kills fungi and yeasts that cause ringworm, athletes foot, joch itch and candida. It kills viruses that cause influenza, measles, herpes, mononucleosis, and hepatitis C. It has been discovered that most people with Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases have Lyme parasites in their brains, as well as the oral herpes virus and candida. Coconut oil may be able to kill some of these infections.

Coconut oil also neutralizes some environmental toxins. According to Dr. Sponaugle, of the Sponaugle Wellness Institute, the brains of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s patients are saturated in environmental chemicals and heavy metals, as well as a variety of infections. Ridding the brain of heavy metals and chemicals and neutralizing the infections is of utmost importance  if one is to reverse a neurodegenerative disease.

According to the book Stop Alzheimer’s Now by Bruce Fife, if you already have diabetes or a neurodegenerative disease, you will want to go on a very low-carb ketogenic diet. This diet allows only 25 grams of carbohydrates a day. You will do this diet if your fasting blood glucose is 126 mg/dl or greater. No single meal should exceed half of the day’s total carbohydrate allowance.

If you are insulin toxic, but not yet diabetic, you can go on a low-carb diet that includes 50 grams of carbohydrates. Fasting glucose will be 101 to 125 mg/ml. Again, no single meal should exceed half of the day’s total carbohydrate allowance.

If your fasting blood glucose is between 91 and 100 mg/dl, you can eat 100 grams of carbohydrates a day. No single meal should exceed half of the day’s total carbohydrate allowance.

If, after being on the diet for a period of time, your fasting blood glucose has dropped to a lower category, you can move to the next level and increase your carbohydrate intake.

If fasting blood sugar levels are below 91 mg/dl, blood sugar and insulin control is normal and apparently working properly. However, you must always be aware of how much carbs you eat as you could move into insulin toxicity at any time.

Dr. Ali says that as a general rule of thumb when eating carbs, always eat them with healthy fats, protein, and/or fiber. Whole fruits should be eaten with cheese, cottage cheese, plain yogurt, or nuts. Use whole milk on oatmeal, stir butter or coconut oil into it, or have an egg or bacon on the side as protein and fats cause your food to digest more slowly and therefore slows down the release of blood sugar. Use lots of butter on your toast, especially if you put sugary jam on it. Healthy fats from animal products are good for you. They are a high quality source of fuel that do not cause weight gain. Milk that has had the fat removed is nothing more than sugar, so always use whole milk products. Trans fats in particular poison the brain and should always be avoided.

When going on a low-carb or ketogenic diet, for the first few weeks you must know your carb count by checking with, or get a carb counter app for your cell phone. Once you become familiar with the amount of carbs in the food you eat you will automatically know how much carbs you are eating. Low sugar fruits like lemons, limes, blueberries, blackberries and strawberries are the best fruits to include in your diet as they are high in nutrients as well as low in fructose.

General Dietary Guidelines to Improve Your Health:

    1. Avoid fruit juice. There is as much sugar in 12 ounces of fruit juice as the same amount of coke – about 10 teaspoons.
    2. Whole fruit contains fiber and other nutrients that prevent sugar spikes. Eat only one or two pieces of fruit a day, preferably with fat, fiber, or a protein source such as nuts.
    3. According to Bruce Fife, author of Stop Alzheimer’s Now, the latest dietary guidelines are that “we need from 5 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Since a serving is ½ cup, that means between 2 ½ and 6 ½ cups a day. This amount depends on your total calorie requirement. An average sized adult needs about 2,000 calories a day to maintain weight and health. This translates into 9 servings or 4 ½ cups a day. There are 3 exceptions to this rule: lettuce, dried fruit, and potatoes. You need 2 cups of lettuce and other raw leafy greens to make one serving. For dried fruit you only need ½ cup to get the equivalent of one cup of fruit. Potatoes are not counted as vegetables, since they are mostly starch and should be used sparingly.” You should not eat more than one or two servings of fruit a day. Though they add nutrients, they are too high in sugar to be beneficial, especially if you have a blood sugar problem.
    4. Eat only whole foods as they have a full complement of nutrients, fat, and fiber.
    5. If you don’t like vegetables, learn to make delicious rich sauces made from fats such as butter, cheese, cream, nuts, seeds, meat drippings, crumbled bacon, and pieces of ham to cover them with.
    6. Good quality organic animal protein and saturated meat, fish, and chicken fat are important as they provide optimal nutrition. Meat, eggs, fish, and dairy are the best sources of vitamins A, B6, and B12. Avoid non-organic meat and milk, which contains growth hormones and antibiotics. Be happy! You can now eat all the natural butter that you want, as well as eat that delicious skin on chicken again! If you are a vegan, a good protein alternative is Pure Green Protein by Vibrant Health.
    7. Because there has been a serious reduction in nutrients within our fruits and vegetables, we must supplement if we are to get all the nutrients we need to cure disease. Also, nutrients are the only things that allow the body to neutralize toxins. Without them we cannot detoxify ourselves. Whenever possible use whole food supplements as they tend to absorb into the body better. Unfortunately, high quality whole food supplements that are good for the body tend to be rather expensive but well worth the additional cost, especially if the idea is to improve your health.     8. Some single nutrients must be supplemented. Before doing so it is best to take a nutrient deficiency test. You can do so at testyourintoleranceusa.comVitamin D3 which comes from sunlight, is one of them if you do not live near the equator. We need 2000 to 5000 IU per day. Other nutrients of importance are MSM, which is good for the bowel, liver, and brain, 500-1000 milligrams, and taurine, which is good for the nerves, improves brain health, and stabilizes cell membranes, 250 miligrams. Because glutathione and B12 aren’t easily absorbed, they are best taken in IV’s or injections. Both are good for all brain disorders like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, MS, Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS, etc., and inflammatory diseases like lupus and arthritis. They may also improve mental illness, Asperger’s and autism, ADD and ADHD, learning disorders, etc.
    9. Oxygen is the most important nutrient. It is also a neurotransmitter. After oxygen the next most important nutrient is water. Because we live on an oxygen deprived planet that is being suffocated by pollution and by the removal of our rain forest, it is important to do hydrogen peroxide foot soaks on a daily basis.     10. Drink plenty of water. To be sure you do so, fill up a pitcher or several jars with the amount of water you need to consume for the day (6 to 8 glasses depending upon your weight). Keep on counter or put it in frig if you like it cold. Try to empty your water containers each and every day. Stay away from coffee as it is very acidic. You can flavor your water with lemon, which is also alkalinizing and has a detoxifying effect on the liver. You can also add orange slices, cucumber slices, fresh cilantro or parsley,  rose petals, calendula flowers, lavender, or hibiscus flowers, mint leaves, watermellon or cantaloupe slices and other delights to the water. (Don’t blend it.) As it sits in the water it gradually imparts a subtle flavor that makes the water delicious. See for some great ideas.
    11. Natural inflammation fighters are: ginger, turmeric, and fish oil, but make sure that you are not allergic to them first. Raw ginger root can be cut into thin slices and simmered in water for 30 minutes to make a tea. After it is removed from heat, add your favorite herbal tea to create a great taste sensation that is both nutritious and anti-inflammatory. One half teaspoon of tumeric powder twice a day is best taken with 500 milligrams of vitamin C.
    12. For breakfast have Dr. Ali’s breakfast: to 16 ounces of vegetable juice add an equal amount of water. Add approximately 2 tablespoons of non-gmo lecithin, 2 tablespoons of freshly ground flax seed, high quality protein powder (whey is the best if you aren’t allergic to it), shake or blend well. Drink throughout the day to normalize blood sugar. Optional ingredients are  coconut oil, fish oil, whole fat plain yogurt, cottage cheese, or kefir. Instead of using water you can use green tea or an herbal tea of your choice.  Dr. Ali’s breakfast is highly nourishing, full of minerals from the vegetable juice, protein from the protein powder, and healthy fat from the flax seed. It can be drunk throughout the day to stave off hunger for those trying to lose weight and alleviate blood sugar problems.

13. A NutriBullet is a great little blender that will allow you to easily get the vegetables and other nutrients that you need on a daily basis if you follow their recommendations. The system is simple. Into the NutriBullet blender cup put 50% greens, 50% fruit, a couple of tablespoons of ground nuts or seeds, and water. The special blender extracts all the nutrients and breaks down the fiber, which makes it a 100% absorbable food. 14. Another way to get those vegies is by making green smoothies, which is basically the same idea as the NutriBullet but made in an ordinary blender.  There are lots of recipes on YouTube. Here’s a good one which will give you the basic idea.

15. Juicing is also a great way to get all your vegies. However, carrots and beets, which form the major ingredients in vegetable juice, are high in fructose, so can cause insulin spikes unless you use them judiciously. A slightly sweet vegetable juice is better for you than one that is very sweet. To your juice you can also add protein powder, plain yogurt or kefir, ground flax seed or other healthy fat. This will slow down the amount of sugar that enters the blood stream and prevent sugar and insulin spikes.

Eating healthy is simple if you know how. It is re-educating yourself that is the hard part. Once you have figured out how to eat a low-carb diet that is rich in vitamins, minerals, fats and proteins from lots of vegetables, a small amount of fruit, and healthy animal products you will not only slenderize, you will balance your blood sugar and be well on your way to avoiding cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and many other illnesses that have insulin toxicity at their core.

Most of this information for this post came from Dr. Majid Al’si many YouTube videos and seminars, Stop Alzheimer’s Now by Dr. Bruce Fife, and many other websites that I resonate with.
